Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to announce the opening of our new exhibition space in downtown Los Angeles. Spanning the entire length of 1700 South Santa Fe Avenue, the 11,000 sf warehouse will host some of the gallery’s most ambitiously scaled exhibitions to date and provides additional space for both a screening and reading room. It will be used as a second exhibition space in addition to our Culver City gallery. The gallery design was developed in collaboration with TOLO Architecture and Anderson Studio.

The gallery will open during Frieze LA with a preview on Friday, February 15, 2019, and will open to the public on Saturday, February 16. The inaugural exhibition will feature new and historic works by artists from the gallery’s roster: Edgar Arceneaux, Sadie Benning, Andrea Bowers, Kim Dingle, Sean Duffy, Nicole Eisenman, Charles Gaines, Karl Haendel, Stanya Kahn, Mary Kelly, Rodney McMillian, Wangechi Mutu, Ruben Ochoa, Pope.L, Amy Sillman, and Nicola Tyson. The inaugural exhibition will be followed by solo exhibitions of new work by Arlene Shechet, Deborah Roberts, Sam Levi Jones, Genevieve Gaignard, Andrea Bowers, Shana Lutker, and Liz Glynn.

The downtown gallery is located at 1700 S Santa Fe Avenue, just south of the 10 freeway. Limited parking is available on the north parking lot adjacent to the building. Visitors to the opening are encouraged to use ride sharing services.

Library of Ideas: A Course by Charles Gaines, Part One

“Charles Gaines, LA-based conceptual artist, faculty member at CalArts, and recipient of the 2019 Edward MacDowell Medal, will transform the Book & Printed Matter Lab at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles into his classroom. On the occasion of ‘Charles Gaines. Palm Trees and Other Works,’ he will conduct a ten-part lecture series on the tenets of aesthetics and critical theory in art, bringing his mastery of the field into a public setting.

“Like the arsonist who watches his work smoulder, we humans are often compelled to keep our darkest, wildest instincts just within view. As if to see malefic energies beside us is to keep ourselves from assuming their form.

Gert & Uwe Tobias are masters of conjuring faintly perceptible desires as they ooze from cracks in our psyches. For their sixth solo exhibition at rodolphe janssen, mythological creatures make barely contained pets in portraiture. At times they appear to pose amenably, at others they wriggle free from their human counterparts, who counter candidness and mayhem with solemnity and seductively piercing side glances. These are portraits of the human infatuation with monstrosity, of chaotic symbiosis: a bearing of mythological alter-egos.

Influences of Symbolism are at play in the Tobias Brothers’ paintings, what Huysmans, in his analysis of Odilon Redon’s paintings, called “undreamed-of images”. And yet, we rarely encounter the all-encompassing darkness of Gustave Moreau. Subject and object, fore- and background merge playfully in sepia and quinacridone washes. Figures are delineated as they emerge from murky spaces, the whiteness of their eyes and hands the focal point around which atmospheric gestures recall hair, ectoplasm, and mist.

In the 12th century zoological survey Bestiary, the characteristics of animals both real and supernatural are described in equal detail; Unicorns and griffins are provided the same ontological seriousness as horses and peacocks. Mythological creatures, in other words, have long occupied psychic space with the same fear and excitement as wild animals kept as pets, physical manifestations of what lies beyond the human. They sit tenderly close to our longing.”

SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical and historic New York City exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week. The eighth annual exhibition will be held from March 5th  – March 11th, 2019. 

By first inhabiting St. Patrick’s Old School, and then the former James A. Farley Post Office, the initiative offers independent curators free space within New York City landmarks, past and future. In exchange for no-cost exhibition space, visionary perspectives both established and unknown are charged with engaging these areas under a unifying theme and pushed to extend the boundries of typical market week practices, low overhead and shifting curatorial themes their assets to this end. 

All artworks in the show are displayed and available for purchase online, giving artists unknown, emerging, mid-career, and beyond a virtual compliment to their tactile exhibition.

Low-cost exhibition space and low-cost entry for art patrons, public, and practioners alike aims to widen the arts audience in New York and broaden the dialog of what constitutes value and economy in a 21st Century city.

In March 2019, over 100 curators will premiere new artworks created by over 400 artists, all selected around this year’s central art theme, FACT AND FICTION.

A new Film by Eric Minh Swenson

SHOW Gallery exhibited “Charcoal Collection” by Corran Brownlee at their new contemporary art space in Hollywood from March 1st to April 6th, 2018. As the artist in residence for the month of March, Corran worked on a new body of work in the mezzanine studio at SHOW Gallery while his 15 original charcoal drawings were on display in the main exhibition space.

During Corran’s residency he was also experimenting with the creative tools available on the PicsArt app, which now has over 100 million monthly active users. Corran did a 24 hourCharcoal Collection by Corran Brownlee editing challenge with PicsArt’s global community to remix his original “Mermaid” drawing. There were over one thousand submissions that can be viewed here: https://picsart.com/challenge/ircmysticalmermaid. The remix video of Corran’s top picks was shown as a video installation at the Gallery during the exhibition.

Each piece in Charcoal Collection is a scene from an untold story. The narrative is hinted at, but never revealed. The artist draws the viewer into a still and silent world, devoid of colour, where their imagination is given free rein. The viewer becomes the storyteller. And like any good story, these ghostly, romantic images linger in the mind.

Much of the scene remains hidden beneath a heavy layer of charcoal, inviting the viewer to look for answers in the shadows. The subjects themselves are lifted out of the darkness, as if projected from a dream. Often turned away from the viewer, they exist in their own world, unaware of our scrutiny.

Where are they going? Who, or what, are they waiting for? The questions hang in the air, waiting for us to provide the answers.

For twenty years Corran Brownlee has used his craft to realize the vision of other filmmakers and storytellers from fight sequence storyboards for Jackie Chan to concept images for James Bond opening titles. This collection allows us to journey into his own world.

“Have you ever wondered what artists listen to while in the studio and what that tell us

about the artist? London based artist Pia Pack did and took her relocation to Los Angeles as an opportunity to get to know her new city and fellow artists. What Artists Listen To first season explores the soundtracks of Los Angeles female identifying artist’s lives through discussion of tracks on their curated playlist. Inspired by Kim Schoenstadt’s Now Be Here project, Pia decided to focus solely on female identifying Los Angeles artists for the first season of W.A.L.T.

“I love the project because for most artists music has gone hand in hand with their studio practice since the very beginning – it’s a bit like asking to see their dairies. As a listener, it further fleshes out the artists, it’s an insight into their artistic process.“ says creator Pia Pack. The live version will feature Alexandra Grant, Zeal Harris, Cole James, Alison Saar, Shizu Salamando, among others. Pia’s studio work focuses on the way people connect and interact, translating movements and mapping sounds into her artwork. At the centre of her practice is the desire to bring people together. Pia Pack studied fine art in London at Byam Shaw St. Martins School of Art,Wimbledon School of Art, and Hochschule für Künste, Hamburg. She recently completed her MFA at Bath School of Art.

For more than five decades, Vija Celmins has been creating subtle, exquisitely detailed renderings of the physical world — including oceans, desert floors, and night skies. Distilling vast, expansive distances into mesmerizing, small-scale artworks, these “redescriptions” are a way to understand human consciousness in relation to lived experience. One of the few women to be recognized as a significant artist in 1960s Los Angeles, Celmins relocated to New York City in 1981, where she continues to live and work. Vija Celmins: To Fix the Image in Memory features more than 140 artworks, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures. A global debut, this is the first Celmins retrospective in North America in more than twenty-five years.
